About

Fifteen years ago, Julie immigrated from Guangzhou, China to a strange new world of hamburgers, sit-down toilets, sarcasm, and the English language. While assimilating into the American culture and still holding onto her roots, she discovered a burning passion for dance, film, and everything creative.

In high school, she joined the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, helped establish a dance division, and was voted “Most Likely to Stalk Jackie Chan”. The next adventure was college, and Julie moved to sunny San Diego to attend UCSD. Torn between a million dreams–hers, her family’s, and society’s–she switched majors from dance to aerospace engineering to business.

Fast forward to 2011, the UC San Diego graduate can be found in Los Angeles, finally armed with the courage to pursue her dreams—acting and filmmaking, with an emphasis on dance. Julie is also a devoted advocate of increasing Asian American representation in the media arts; to help give a voice to the dynamic and vibrant Asian American community. AA’s are So. Much. More. than the passive, quiet “model minority” who are not only often afterthoughts, but cannot even be considered for leading roles they were meant for (ahemlastairbenderanddragonballz). This fueled her involvement with and support for the San Diego Asian Film Foundation, followed by the establishment of TheOtherAsians (OA) online magazine with fellow co-founders Melly Lee and Benny Luo. Julie can also be found covering Asian American, dance, and other media events as a correspondent for Pacific Rim Video.

Her ultimate goal in life: to create art and inspire others to pursue and share their passion.

Fun Facts:

*What takes up most of your time right now: Full time marketing/PR job at a production company, OA, dance, acting, and editing on weekday nights, filmmaking on the weekends

*Guilty Pleasure: Reenacting scenes from movies in the bathroom mirror/pretending I’m in a music video when a good song comes on in the car…no, not lame at all…

*The one constant thing in your life: Dance, dance, and dance. Here is my love letter to dance

*Your comfort food: 1000 year old egg porridge and anything grandma makes mmmmmhhhhhmmmm

Fun Fact: I was born left-handed, but in first grade back in China, they forced us to write with our right hand. After years of doing so, one day I picked up a pen with my left hand to see if I could still write with it. I busted a Leonardo DaVinci and started writing backwards (i.e., if you held it up to a mirror, it would read forward). I now enjoy confusing people by doing that haphazardly.

Funner Fact: I was in a Sega Dreamcast commercial

Astrological signs: Gemini, Dragon; Myers-Briggs Personality: ENFP
